Day 4: Preparation is Key
"Willingness in sobriety simply means being ready to do the things we don’t want to do until they become the normal things that we LIKE to do." - Harmony Hills
Welcome to Day 4!
When I really got serious about adopting an alcohol-free lifestyle, I decided that I needed to PREPARE WAY ahead of time for events, social situations and even just nighttime routines. I found that if I didn’t have a plan, I would revert back to old habits because that was easiest for me.
I truly believe that preparation is key in living a sober life, especially during the first few weeks where everything is so new and alcohol is everywhere. So, here is how I prepare:
I plan ahead of time what I will drink - I select a few drinks that I know what I will drink ahead of time and practice them. For example, "soda water with lime, please." If they don't have soda water, then I know I will order a non-alcoholic beer, "O'Douls please" if they don't have that, then I may ask for lemonade with tea. I practice having confidence to order my non-alcoholic drinks and I'm prepared if they don't have something I want.
I know what I will say when someone asks why I’m not drinking (because you know they will!) - The main thing is to have a reason - most people, especially if they are friends you drink with will ask why you aren't drinking. You can have a list of things to share, such as:
I'm taking a break from alcohol
I'm trying this alcohol free challenge
No wine for me tonight, thanks. I’m waking up early tomorrow to check out a new spin class
I've been sleeping like crap so I want to drink less
If I have one, I’ll have 12 so I’m not even going to start tonight
Alcohol is making me really anxious lately and I need to cut it out
I'm sick of the hangovers and feeling tired. I'm taking a break for a while
I’m on medication that mixes with alcohol
I’m driving tonight
I don’t feel like it
Honestly, anyone who drinks with you will know the downside of drinking. Try to be honest with them and open up a bit and maybe you guys can have some great conversations!
Some of the people I was most afraid to tell at first are the ones who shared that they would like to cut back, too.
It helps once you get some sober days under your belt and start to feel confident and great! I know you may have heard this before - but it really DOES get EASIER!

Take a look at your calendar over the next several days and identify anything that is coming up that you will need to prepare for. Remember, this could be a birthday party, book club or even your normal Tuesday night routine. Then make a plan of action as to what you are going to drink, what you are going to say, what you are going to visualize and how you need to prepare to ensure a successful day.
Say your Daily Mantra "I prepare for my inevitable success."
